Chalking Paint

Apr 19, 2023 | Uncategorized

Chalking is when there is a white powder on top of the paint due to weathering. It might look as if the paint is fading, but it is really chalking. Chalking can be very serious when there is excessive film erosion.

Possible causes of chalking:

  • Over-thinning a coating
  • Oil-based paint
  • Use of low-grade, pigmented paint
  • Paint being spread too thin
  • Using interior paint to paint outdoors

To remove the chalk, you will have to wash it or power wash it with the correct kind of cleaner. If there is still some chalk left over after washing it, you will need to wash it again and make sure to scrub the surface that has the chalk. After washing the surface, rinse the surface with clean water and then let the surface dry.
